Automatic Gearbox Servicing & Repair

Fluid care that keeps automatics, DSG and S tronic shifting smoothly

Method

Machine flush, not just drain & fill

Gearboxes

DSG, S tronic, Tiptronic, CVT, torque converter

After service

Adaptations reset where required

Overview

Specialist ATF flush, diagnostics and repair for DSG, S-Tronic, Tiptronic, Multitronic and conventional automatic transmissions.

Automatic transmissions live or die by their fluid. It lubricates, cools, cleans and — in a modern automatic — acts as the hydraulic medium that actually makes the gear changes happen. As it ages it breaks down, collects friction material and loses the properties the gearbox was designed around.

A simple drain-and-refill typically only replaces part of the fluid, because much of it stays in the torque converter, cooler and valve body. M.O. Auto Repairs uses dedicated gearbox flushing equipment to exchange the old fluid far more completely, using the transmission fluid specified for your exact unit.

The result is usually immediately noticeable: smoother take-up, cleaner shifts and less hesitation — and, more importantly, a gearbox that is far better protected against expensive wear.

Jerky or harsh gear changes

A thump into gear, especially when warm, is one of the most common symptoms of degraded fluid or adaptation values that have drifted.

What you should know about automatic gearbox

01

The truth about "sealed for life"

Many automatic gearboxes are described as sealed for life, with no fluid change in the routine schedule. The phrase can be misleading: it often reflects the expected life of the unit under ideal conditions, not a promise that the fluid will last forever. Plenty of transmission specialists recommend periodic fluid changes to reduce wear, particularly on cars that tow, do short trips or spend time in stop-start traffic.

Dual-clutch vs torque converter

A dual-clutch gearbox such as VW's DSG or Audi's S tronic works like two manual gearboxes run by a hydraulic or electro-mechanical mechatronic unit. A conventional automatic uses a torque converter and planetary gearsets. They need different fluids, different procedures and, often, different post-service settings.

Knowing which is which — and which version of each — is fundamental to servicing them properly.

Why temperature-correct fill matters

Most modern automatics have no dipstick. The fluid level is set by checking at a specific fluid temperature read from the gearbox control unit. Overfilling or underfilling by even a small amount can affect shift quality and lubrication, which is why this step is done with diagnostic equipment connected.

Did you know?

In many automatics, a straightforward drain-and-refill replaces only a portion of the fluid. The rest stays in the torque converter and cooler lines — which is why a proper fluid exchange makes such a difference.

On VW, Audi, ŠKODA & SEAT

VW Group DSG and S-Tronic transmissions have specific service intervals (typically 40,000 miles) and require exact ATF specifications. Mark uses the correct fluid (e.g., G 052 182 A2 for DQ250, G 004 000 M2 for DQ200 mechatronic) and can reset adaptation values via ODIS after the service.

  • Wet-clutch DSG units (e.g. DQ250, DQ381, DQ500) serviced with the correct VW fluid and filter
  • Dry-clutch DQ200 7-speed mechatronic and gear oil requirements understood
  • Audi S tronic, Tiptronic and Multitronic variants identified correctly
  • Basic settings and clutch adaptations run through ODIS after service
  • Haldex / 4MOTION coupling servicing can be checked at the same visit
