Overview
Clutch replacement, dual-mass flywheel, concentric slave cylinder and hydraulic clutch system repairs.
Clutches wear gradually, and most drivers adapt to the changes without noticing — until the car starts revving without accelerating on a hill, or a judder appears every time it pulls away. By then the friction plate may be nearly gone.
Not every clutch complaint means a new clutch. A heavy pedal can be a hydraulic issue, a noise can be a release bearing, and judder can be caused by engine mounts or a dual-mass flywheel. Mark confirms the cause before quoting so you are not paying for a gearbox-out job that would not solve the problem.
When a clutch replacement is needed, the flywheel is inspected and the release system assessed, so the job is done once and done right.

In depth
What you should know about clutches
What is a dual-mass flywheel?
Many modern diesels and performance petrols use a dual-mass flywheel — two masses connected by springs that absorb engine vibrations before they reach the gearbox. They wear too, and a worn one can cause rattles, judder and vibration. Because replacing the clutch means removing the gearbox, checking the flywheel at the same time avoids paying for the same labour twice.

Making a clutch last
Riding the clutch, holding the car on the biting point on hills and resting a foot on the pedal all add wear. Using the handbrake for hill starts and selecting neutral at long stops helps a clutch go further.

Concentric slave cylinders
Many cars have the clutch slave cylinder inside the bell housing. If it fails after a clutch job, the gearbox has to come out again. Assessing and, where sensible, replacing it during the clutch job is often the better long-term value — something that is discussed with you beforehand.

Did you know?
Clutch life varies hugely — the same car can wear a clutch out quickly in town or keep the original clutch for many years on open roads. Driving style is the biggest factor.
On VW, Audi, ŠKODA & SEAT
VAG TDI engines are particularly known for dual-mass flywheel wear, especially in the PD and CR TDI variants. Mark knows which engine/gearbox combinations are prone to issues and what to look for during the inspection.
- Clutch replacement on VAG manual gearboxes such as the 02Q and 0A4 families
- DSG clutch-pack issues diagnosed with ODIS before any work is quoted
- Clutch adaptations and basic settings performed after DSG repairs
- Dual-mass flywheel condition assessed on TDI engines
