Overview
Springs, dampers, drop links, anti-roll bars and full geometry alignment.
Northern Ireland's back roads are hard on suspension. Potholes, broken edges and rough surfaces work bushes, ball joints and drop links loose, and coil springs can snap with surprisingly little warning. Worn suspension affects more than comfort — it changes braking distances, cornering stability and how quickly your tyres wear.
Suspension noises are notoriously misleading. A knock that seems to come from the front left can be a drop link on the right. Mark inspects suspension on the lift with the wheels both hanging and loaded, checking each joint and bush for play rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
Where components are replaced, quality parts are fitted and you are advised if the work affects wheel alignment so the car drives straight and the tyres wear evenly.

In depth
What you should know about suspension
Why worn suspension affects braking
Shock absorbers keep the tyres in contact with the road. When they are worn, the tyre can skip and lose grip over uneven surfaces — under braking that means longer stopping distances and earlier ABS intervention. Suspension is a safety system, not just a comfort one.

Pairs, not singles
Shock absorbers and springs should normally be replaced in axle pairs, so both sides of the car behave the same way. Replacing only one side can make the car feel unbalanced, especially under braking or in crosswinds.

Suspension and the MOT
Excessive play in suspension joints, broken springs and leaking shock absorbers can all be reasons for a vehicle test failure. Having suspension checked before a test avoids surprises and a retest.

Did you know?
A snapped coil spring can be hard to spot at a glance — often the break is near the bottom coil, hidden inside the spring seat.
On VW, Audi, ŠKODA & SEAT
VAG vehicles, particularly those with multi-link rear suspension (Golf, A3, Octavia, Leon), have specific geometry settings. Mark has the tooling and knowledge to set these correctly, avoiding the premature inner-edge tyre wear that is common when geometry is not adjusted after suspension work.
- Familiar with VAG front lower arm bushes, drop links and top mount wear patterns
- Multi-link rear suspension on Golf, A3, Octavia and Leon platforms understood
- Adaptive (DCC) damping faults diagnosed with ODIS
- Headlight range and driver-assist calibration considered after ride-height changes
Every other make, too
From small hatchbacks to vans and SUVs, every make gets the same lift-based inspection and honest assessment of what genuinely needs replacing.
