Overview

Pre-MOT inspection and rectification to pass first time. PSV preparation for light commercial vehicles.

In Northern Ireland, vehicle tests are carried out by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) at its own test centres. M.O. Auto Repairs is not a test centre — what Mark does is make sure your car is properly prepared before it goes, so it has the best possible chance of passing first time.

Many test failures are simple things — a bulb, a wiper blade, a warning light, worn tyres, headlight aim. Others, such as suspension wear, brake imbalance, corrosion or exhaust emissions, take longer to fix and are much better discovered before the test date than on it.

A pre-test inspection works through the areas the test focuses on, explains anything that is likely to fail and lets you decide what gets repaired beforehand.

In depth

What you should know about mot & psv preparation

01

How vehicle testing works in Northern Ireland

Unlike Great Britain, where tests are carried out at approved private garages, Northern Ireland's tests are done by the DVA. Appointments are booked through nidirect. M.O. Auto Repairs prepares the vehicle; the DVA tests it.

You can check your car's next test date and its past test history using the official GOV.UK MOT history service, which includes Northern Ireland test results from 2017 onwards.

Why preparation saves time and money

A failed test means arranging repairs, then a retest — time off work, another trip and the chance the car cannot be used until it passes. Spotting issues beforehand lets you fix them on your schedule rather than under pressure.

PSV and commercial preparation

Private hire, taxis and other PSVs face their own inspection standards and are often relied on for income. Preparation focuses on reducing downtime by finding problems early. Talk to Mark about your specific vehicle and requirements.

Your previous test advisories are a free to-do list. Check them on the GOV.UK MOT history service before your next test.

On VW, Audi, ŠKODA & SEAT

Common VAG-specific MOT issues include DPF-related emissions failures, ABS sensor faults affecting traction control warning lights, and electronic parking brake issues. Mark knows these patterns and checks for them during the pre-MOT inspection.

  • Full ODIS scan to clear up any VAG warning lights before the test
  • Known VAG test-failure items checked — from drop links to number plate lights
  • EPB, ABS and airbag faults diagnosed properly rather than just cleared
  • Headlight range control set correctly on xenon and LED models
