Overview

Precision beam alignment for MOT compliance and safe night driving.

Headlights that point too low cut your visibility on dark Northern Ireland roads; lights that point too high dazzle oncoming drivers. Either way, poor aim is a common reason for vehicle test failures — and something most drivers cannot see from behind the wheel.

Headlight aim can drift after a bump, a suspension repair, a replacement headlamp unit or even a bulb change. On cars with automatic levelling, a fault in a height sensor can leave the beams pointing the wrong way.

M.O. Auto Repairs checks both headlamps, adjusts them to the correct pattern and, where the car uses automatic levelling, checks the system so the setting holds.

In depth

What you should know about headlight alignment

01

Why aim drifts

Headlamp adjusters are plastic and sit in a hot, vibrating environment. Over time they can move, and impacts — even a pothole — can knock a lamp out of position. Suspension changes alter the angle of the whole car, which shifts the beam with it.

02

Xenon and LED headlights

High-intensity headlights are particularly dazzling if misaimed, which is why they are usually paired with automatic levelling and sometimes headlamp washers. If a levelling sensor fails, the lights may not adjust for load and can blind other drivers.

03

Hazy lenses

Yellowed or cloudy plastic lenses scatter light and reduce the beam's reach. Lens condition is noted during the check so you know whether it is affecting performance.

Did you know?

Loading a car with passengers and luggage raises the front lights. That is why many cars have a manual levelling dial — and why using it on a fully loaded trip matters.

On VW, Audi, ŠKODA & SEAT

VAG vehicles with adaptive or auto-levelling headlights (Xenon, LED) may need diagnostic calibration in addition to physical alignment. ODIS can access headlight range control systems and reset levelling values.

  • Automatic headlight range control basic settings performed via ODIS
  • Height sensor faults on xenon and LED-equipped VAG models diagnosed
  • Adaptive / cornering light faults investigated
  • Coding checked after headlamp unit replacement
