Overview
Manufacturer-interval belt and chain replacement, including water pump, tensioners and idler pulleys.
The timing belt or chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts in perfect step. On most modern engines, if a belt snaps or a chain jumps, pistons and valves collide — and what could have been a planned maintenance job becomes a major engine repair or a replacement engine.
Timing belts have a replacement interval set by mileage and age, whichever comes first. Timing chains are designed to last much longer, but tensioners, guides and the chains themselves can wear, particularly when oil changes have been stretched or the wrong oil used.
Mark uses the correct engine-specific locking tools, replaces the full kit — belt, tensioner and idlers, and the water pump where it is driven by the belt — and checks timing is exact before the engine is started.

Interval due or unknown
If there is no record of the belt being changed, treat it as due. It is far cheaper than the alternative.

In depth
What you should know about timing belts & chains
Interference engines explained
In an interference engine, the valves and pistons share the same space at different moments. Timing keeps them apart. Lose that timing and they collide, bending valves and potentially damaging pistons and the cylinder head. Most modern petrol and diesel engines are interference designs.

Why the whole kit is replaced
A new belt on old tensioners and idlers is a false economy — if a bearing fails, the new belt fails with it. Replacing the full kit, and the water pump where it is part of the belt run, means the labour is only paid for once.

Timing chains aren't always for life
Chains rely on clean oil and hydraulic tensioners. Extended oil changes and incorrect oil grades can accelerate wear. Diagnostic data can show how far the camshaft timing has drifted from the crankshaft — a useful early warning before a chain becomes noisy or jumps.

Did you know?
Timing belt intervals have an age limit as well as a mileage limit. A low-mileage car can still need its belt replaced simply because the rubber has aged.
On VW, Audi, ŠKODA & SEAT
VAG 1.8T, 2.0 TDI PD, 2.0 TDI CR, 2.0 TSI (EA888) and many other VAG engines have well-known timing system requirements. Mark has the correct locking tools and knows the specific procedures and common pitfalls for each variant.
- TDI timing belt kits on EA189 and EA288 engines with correct locking tools
- EA888 TSI/TFSI timing chain and tensioner condition assessed
- Camshaft/crankshaft correlation and adjustment values read with ODIS
- Belt-driven water pumps and thermostat housing leaks checked at the same time
Every other make, too
Timing belt and chain work for all makes — every engine is done with its correct tooling and manufacturer procedure.
